Biodiversity of Hong Kong

Hong Kong as a world-class financial cosmopolitan is well-developed with skyscrapers, highways and malls. Yet are you aware that she is also a biodiversity hotspot habituated by creatures of all kind.
What actually is Biodiversity?
“Biodiversity”, or the biological diversity, describes the degree of variation of life forms, including animals and plants. They are in complicated interrelationships and interact with each other to make a dynamic yet balanced living environment.
Biodiversity is important in human’s well-being. Natural resources, for instance, plants and animals for food and medicine, woods for fuel, oxygen for breathing, are closely correlated with biodiversity. The balance of oxygen concentration in the atmosphere is
mainly maintained by tiny plankton in the ocean as well as the terrestrial plants through the process of photosynthesis.
Plants also provide us with fruits and vegetables, which supply us with their nutrition, and this requires insects and many other animals to pollinate. Without this process, food supply to human and the whole biosphere would face a dire threat. Besides the aforementioned examples, the interactions of the great variety of living organisms served to benefit the Earth itself profoundly.
There are three main degrees of biodiversity:
i. Habitat Diversity
ii. Species Diversity
iii. Genetic Diversity
But why be diverse? Different processes of evolution have driven the diversifying of life so that we now have, for example, instead of one species of flying bird, over 10,000 species of unalike birds each with its own niche and habitat.
Biodiversity boosts ecosystem productivity where each species, no matter how small, all have an important role to play. A greater species diversity ensures natural sustainability for all life forms - when there is a calamity (e.g. depletion of a food source), the more varying talents there is in the population, the less vulnerable the ecosystem is to a total destruction and the faster its capacity to recover from that event.
The significance of the versatility in an ecosystem lies not in the quantity but the interdependence between species. It can thus be used as a measurement on the healthiness of an ecosystem.
The notable Biodiversity of Hong Kong
There are about 1,400,000 species recorded in the world. Despite having only 1100 km2 of land area, more than 8,000 of them are found in Hong Kong, including 9 First-Grade State protected species, while 6 plants and 79 animals are Second-Grade State protected species.
Do you know that some of the species can be found more often in Hong Kong than in the United Kingdom, which is 225 times larger in size? Hong Kong is disproportionately rich in species!
Why such a small place as Hong Kong has such high biodiversity?
Hong Kong is located along the South China coast, situated in the boundary of Tropic and sub-tropical area, and is influenced by the subtropical oceanic climate. Hong Kong is also hilly in its geographical nature. These two factors make Hong Kong a place with a variety of habitats, such as wetlands, streams, woodlands etc., attaining habitat diversity and hence species diversity.
The exhibition today brings you into the forests, across the streams, along the coast and down to the sea to explore the different habitats of the city and the inhabitants within. Look into the kaleidoscope of life, experience how each of them contributes to the diversity and feel the vivacity of the city!

Session 2011-2012
This is the first time ever I had seen a tern, last summer.
They are just elegant creatures.
I went to this boat trip to Tap Mun with some more experienced hku schoolmates.
These black-napped terns are following our boat for preys.
They were so close, flying ever so gracefully.
What a great experience!
